Meta Ordered to Disburse $567 Million by New Mexico Court for Youth Mental Health Fund

SANTA FE, Mexico / RankWire.AI / – A New Mexico judge has mandated Meta to pay $567 million to establish a fund aimed at addressing youth mental health issues. The ruling by Judge Bryan Biedscheid in Santa Fe concluded a three-week bench trial, determining that Facebook and Instagram created a public nuisance by worsening a mental health crisis among teenagers and neglecting to shield children from online dangers. The funds will primarily be allocated toward clinical treatment programs and child safety initiatives within the state.

This latest financial penalty follows a separate jury award of $375 million issued against Meta in March 2026 during the initial phase of the legal proceedings initiated by New Mexico. In that case, jurors found the company in violation of the state’s consumer protection laws for misrepresenting safety features for younger users. When combined, the two rulings result in Meta owing $567 million for teen mental health programs in New Mexico, with a total liability of $942 million stemming from the state’s legal action led by Attorney General Raúl Torrez.

The court’s detailed remedial order states that $420 million of the newly awarded amount will directly fund clinical mental health treatment services for children across New Mexico. The remaining funds are designated for public education campaigns, early screening efforts, and community prevention initiatives over the next five years. Additionally, the court imposes strict operational requirements on Meta, including enforcing default private settings for under-18 accounts, limiting daily engagement times, restricting notification pushes, and enhancing screening mechanisms for child sexual abuse material.

This enforcement action in Mexico marks one of the largest financial penalties imposed on a major technology firm for child safety practices. Attorney General Torrez initiated the lawsuit after investigations indicated that algorithmic recommendation systems systematically exposed minor accounts to predatory contact and explicit content. While the court ordered significant product modifications, Judge Biedscheid chose not to require mandatory identity verification for users under 13, citing protections under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act.

Following the hearing, Meta representatives confirmed their intention to appeal the decision to higher state courts. In a formal statement, the company emphasized its substantial investments in developing age-appropriate features, parent supervision tools, and automated content moderation systems. Meta’s executives argued that the ruling misrepresents the platform’s design and disregards the company’s ongoing engineering efforts to remove harmful content and identify bad actors on its social networks.

This judicial decision occurs amid increasing legal challenges faced by social media companies across federal and state courts in the United States. Over 40 state attorneys general along with numerous local school districts have filed similar lawsuits, alleging that platform design choices encourage compulsive usage among teenagers. The ruling in New Mexico sets a significant legal precedent as other states prepare for upcoming federal court trials later this year.

As Meta prepares to challenge the $567 million verdict in appellate courts, state legislators are reviewing how to allocate the proceeds from the trial. Officials in New Mexico have indicated that the funds will prioritize rural healthcare access, behavioral health services, and school-based health centers. The structural remedies outlined in the court’s decree are scheduled to remain for five years, pending the outcome of Meta’s appeal.
